The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips - Lydia

My book is called ‘The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips.’ It was written by Michael Morpurgo, you might have heard of him before because he has written many books.
My book is set in 1943, in the middle of World War 2. It is based in Slapton which is in Devon, in Southwest England.
The main character in this book is Lily Tregenza. She is 10 years old and extremely mischievous. I know this because she creeps into restricted areas to look for her cat, Tips. My second main character is called Tips, or later known as Adolphus Tips. She is disobedient because she runs away.
The first main event that happens in this book is that Lily‘s family and the rest of the village are told to leave the village for some time while the American soldiers practice the invasion of France. The second main event in this book is that Lily’s adored cat, Tips, runs away from home during the move. After that, Barry, an evacuee from London comes to stay with Lily because the teacher he was staying with left to go overseas. Then Lily sneaks into restricted areas 3 times to look for her cat Tips and is caught by two soldiers, one of them is called Adolphus T. Mandersion.
Some days after that the two soldiers bring Tips home. Unfortunately, the next day she runs away again. In the next week, Dad arrives home for 5 days while he’s on leave from the army. After Dad leaves Barry’s mum, Ivy comes to stay for a few days while it is Barry’s birthday.
The next day Adolphus T. Mandersion tells Lily’s family that his partner died in an accident while practicing for the invasion of France. Within the next week, Lily’s family hear over the radio that the Americans have left for the invasion of France and that they can all go home. The next day Lily finds this written on her wall ‘January 10th 1944 Adie and Harry were here looking for Tips. Welcome home Lily, Adie and Harry

A Miner's Diary - Emily

Today I had to work down in the wet dewy mines. I hate it, but at least we get lots of gleaming dollar notes and coins. I hate it when I get wrinkly feet and then they go horrible, black and rotten. My uniform is overalls or jeans, bandannas to absorb my sweat, hard hats and gumboots. I work all day, then we have a little bit of time in our tiny dormitory with 50 people in them. After that I go off to the pub with my mates and have a nice cold beer and do our noisy gumboot dances. I like it when I talk all the time with my best mates, it’s way better for me than down in those cold, wet dewy mines, because it’s a bit lonely, and it’s really really hard work for me and all of my team mates. Well, at least my day is over for me and my team mates, but then it’s time to sleep in my tiny stuffy dormitory. Goodnight everyone.

Gumboot Dancing - Oliver

I just had the most unspeakable day at the mines, because the boss was so angry today. I can’t even be bothered to go to gumboot practice and thats the most wonderful part of the day. But I guess I have to do it or else my boss will fire me. When I got there, they had already started and one of them yelled “Hurry up! You’re late!!” When I was doing it, I could really feel the beat. It wasn’t such a dumb thing after all, it was pretty wonderful. It was like a bommy-knocker hitting my legs, then WOZA!!!!! It was as loud as ten thousand speakers with someone yelling into it. After gumboot practice, I had a nice cold beer. Yum.

A Miner's Diary - Perry

Dear diary

It was my worst day ever. I came back from work today it was horrible! This guy got killed today and five others got badly injured and I nearly got hit by a big tumbling bolder. It gets worse. This room is unbearable! And the pay is stink. But luckily its gumboot practice today the best day of the week. Whats gumboot dancing you say. It's the best dancing were all get together and dance. It feels like were really alive. This is luxury compared to that work that we have to do. I mean dancing isn't that great but compared to the work that we do its awesome.

The Day in the Life of a Miner - Holly

My head is ringing, I feel dizzy. The sound of people chipping rocks is replying in my head. A revolting smell a revolting smell covered the mine making everyone uncomfortable. I feel squirmy on the rock-hard beds we have to sleep in, but when I do the gumboot dance, I get sucked away from the bad thoughts of the mine! I feel joyful because we work as a team. Then we I get back from the mines the fun is drained from me!

A Day in the Life of a Miner - Ben H

After a hard day after work I was glad to get back to my house my toes were freezing because down in the Gold mine it is pretty dangerous. I was practicing my Gumboot dancing for my Gold mining that way my buddy and me can communicate and thats how I got warmed up.I am pretty good at my Gumboot dancing, I know many cool kinds of dancing. there are many kinds of Gumboot dancing. I said in my head they help a lot in my Gold mining so that if any thing falls down we can still communicate even through a big brown rock in the way and so that is why I have to master it. Then I went to bed.

Keeli's Camp Reflection

While we were driving to camp, I had lots on my mind. I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I wondered if I was going to enjoy myself or not. I was hoping I would have a good time.

We got to camp and there was a water slide.I assumed it would be fun. As soon as I could, I went down it. When I got to the bottom, I decided it was so fun, I would keep going until I was so cold I could barley move. It seems to me that if the water slide was fun, then the other activities would be too.

Instead of going kayaking, I decided to build bivouacs. At first I had no idea what a bivouac were. But I soon found out that they’re a little bush hut made out of branches and leaves. To get the toi toi we used for the carpet, we had to reach up into cutty grass. I realised that lifting your friend up isn’t the best idea.

The Burma Trail seemed scary at first ,but in the end I realised I had nothing to worry about. Except all the parents hiding in the bushes waiting to scare me. I guess I was just scared because it was my first time.

I am glad I went on camp because I had a good time. I learnt that if you give everything a go you will have fun. I would definitely go on camp again, because there are lots of opportunities to try new things.

Devan's Camp Reflection

Oww. We were almost at camp Mangawhai. I was very excited. The only thing I knew about this place was about 10 photos and the activities. I was worried that I would not be able to do them all. When we got there I was thoughtless - archery looked so cool, the water slide was so long, and the flying fox was high as.

I worked out how to get myself out of bed on the second day. Pods 9 and 11 lined up in the hall. My first activity was archery. I could not wait for my turn.

As we made our way to the flying fox, I felt a bit worried about the run up the hill. As soon as I did it, I discovered it was a real work out.

Next was the water slide, my third favourite thing on the list. I felt cold going down it. I assumed I would get to the bottom, but I didn’t.

As we drove home I felt proud as I remembered doing all the activities, though I was a bit worried that future camps will not be as good. I even learnt something new.

Phoebe's Camp Reflection

It was a really exciting day, it was the day we were going on school camp. I thought it was going to be an awesome day. Thankfully, getting into the cars and going to the beach was easy.

Our first rotation activity was the water slide. I was a bit worried about the splash and how fast it was. I really enjoyed it though. A skill I learned was to keep your head down to go faster.

When I went on the flying fox, it seemed a bit fast, I thought to myself, but once I got on it, I really enjoyed it, especially when I hung upside down.

Another activity I really liked was going on the Burma trail in the dark. It was not very scary, but it was still really cool.

I really enjoyed school camp. I had never been on a flying fox before. All the activities were fun. I would want to go there again. I think other people should go because it is good fun.

Emma's Camp Reflection

Before I went on camp, I felt nervous about how big the water slide and flying fox would be. I was worried about camp getting out of hand and people not listening.

I was nervous that the rope on the flying fox would snap when I went down. I felt relieved when I hit the bottom. It was a frightful ride.

In Archery, I thought that the arrow would fly straight into the pig pen and kill the pig. On my second try, it hit near the bulls eye but not near enough.

I felt overwhelmed when I did Surf Life Saving , because we did an activity where you lay down in the stinky sand. The leader said go and you ran straight forward and get the hose piece.

I thought it was a big bummer going back to school. And I would love to go again. I loved taking part in that camp.

Ben T's Camp Reflection

Before I went to camp, I was feeling sick about it. But I told myself to conquer my fear and go. I was a bit scared to go on the flying fox, like the first time I went up the flying fox at Tangihua.

I was ready to go on the water slide. We had a choice between water slide or the flying fox. I pondered about it for a little while. I reckon the water slide was the best choice. I wasn’t nervous because I had been on one before at the pools. The water slide was cool. Even now, I think it was the best choice.

The next morning, I did the flying fox but I didn’t like it as much as the water slide. After that we walked over to archery. I thought that was pretty cool as well. I worked out that if there’s anything to do with mud or water, its the best choice.

On the last day of camp, we got to do something we would like to do again. I thought hard. It was important we chose what we wanted because we couldn’t change all the time. I chose the water slide. I'm glad it was the right decision to make because I enjoyed it so much.

I have learnt through experience that camp isn’t a test of being away from home. It’s about having fun and enjoying it. If you’re really nervous you don’t have to go. If your friends tell you you’re a chicken you don’t have to go. I would like to go back there for the water slide.

Jessica's Camp Reflection

Boom, Boom, went my heart as I thought about Camp Mangawhai. I felt nervous and excited at the same time. I realised that this camp was going to be fun and busy, not freaky or boring. As I thought about night-time my home-sickness grew and grew, the more I thought about it. It made me shiver.

I was over-whelmed by all of the fun activities, especially the water-slide! I made up my mind and decided to give it a go!
I nervously stepped on to the cold, icy water-slide. It looked like a slithering slug! My mind was blurred as I sped down the slippery water-slide.

“Wahoo!” I shouted as I hit the bottom with a big SPLASH! I discovered that the water-slide wasn’t too bad after all! It started to get a bit chilly so I decided to leave to go back to my messy dorm.

It was night-time now and we had just finished a delicious dinner. We went straight back to our dorms after a story and a game of trivial pursuit. But unfortunately we did not win. I forgot about my home-sickness when I went to bed, because I was too busy trying to fill my pillowcase with clothes!

I was sad to leave camp but wanted to see my family. I believe that if I hadn’t gone, I would have felt mad and silly. I would definitely want to go again and I think that it was an awesome place to take people. I have learnt that if you try new things you feel proud and can tell people what things you have done.

Jevon's Camp Reflection

I was really excited when we were going to camp because I have never been on a camp like this before. I could picture myself going down the water slide really fast.

I was really excited about going on the water-slide. I was thinking am I going to make a big splash. I had made big splashes on other water-slides I have been on, but not all of them.

When we got there, I decided to look at the water-slide. I worked out that it was very long and bumpy. It was so awesome. Also the flying fox was very long too.

I really liked the baking and I thought it was really nice. Then there was the diners which were also nice. After that we had to get ready for bed. We got 5 minutes to get ready for bed and brush our teeth, then it was lights out.

On the last day of camp we got to chose one activity. I chose to go on the flying fox. I was thinking hard because we weren’t allowed to change our minds once we had chosen what we were doing. I had a good time on camp and hope we can go back again.

Ruby's Camp Reflection

I was excited about going on camp, I could not wait. I thought we would have to do a whole load of activities. I was worried about the water slide because it was very long.

Before I went on the water slide I thought it was going to be fast. I felt nervous before I went on it because I have never been on one before. I did enjoy it because it was fast and because I loved the big splash at the end. I learnt that things that you think aren’t always true. I fell proud of my self that I went down.

I thought archery would be hard, but I was not nervous because I have done it before. I really enjoyed it because I hit the target a lot. I learnt how to do archery properly. Now I think it was great fun.

Before I went on the flying fox, I thought it was going to be slow. I had butterflies in my stomach because it was very high. I enjoyed it because it went fast. I learnt it was not that high. I felt it was nice fun.

I’m glad I went on camp because it was good fun.It was worth while because I enjoyed all the activities that we did. I would love to go again because it was the best camp ever. I would recommend it to other friends. I think school should go on camp because it a good way to learn new skills.
The End.
